ContentsAppearanceEdit Shanks is a reasonably tall man (just under two meters), durable, tan-complexioned, and in the prime of his mid-adulthood. Amongst the 4 Emperors previous and present he stands out as the smallest, most normal-sized without a doubt, the others being numerous degrees of inhumanly proportioned. Real to his epithet, Shanks has definitely red hair: usually illustrated across media as deep-crimsonish. Worthwhile of note is that, distinctively among all characters yet seen, even ones with equivalent hair tone, Shanks' hair is the sole one filled with grayscale in the black-and-white manga (rather of inked black or left white). His first-seen hairdo was a straight, middle-parted one kept loosely down to nape length, with much shorter (at eye level), curtained bangs in the front. In later appearances (at 10 years older), he is shown with a little longer hair, wavier and more slicked back than prior to except for some couple of strands he lets fall down the sides of his face, pushed further sideward than said prior bangs.
On his face lives a secondary trademark: a triple set of vertically parallel, linear scars that pass at an angle over his left (unblemished) eye, revealed to have actually been provided to him by Blackbeard some unknown time prior to the start of the series. Additionally, Shanks' left arm is missing out on from below the deltoid, a result of him conserving Luffy from a Sea King when Luffy was a child.
As did his hair, Shanks' face changes as the manga's art design progresses: initially, it appeared more younger, a soft jawline tapering down to a small, pointy chin. Its functions were similarly milder than later on depictions and, conserve for his small nose, likewise larger, most so his plain-black eyes, topped by thin brows. Later on appearances reveal him more considerably countenanced, the square of his jaw, the sharper, narrower set of eyes, and the sculpted, more prominently bridged nose providing him a manlier look. More consistent stays the guy's facial hair, however, that he has actually always kept in a nicely thin connection of beard and mustache stubble, forming the starts of a circle beard.
